At
least 200 innocent dalits and tribals of Jajpur district and its nearby areas
have been languishing in the jails as the authorities with an ulterior motive
branded them as Maoists, alleged chairperson of Human Rights Front Manoj
Jena. He was addressing mediapersons here on Monday.
In the name of development, he said, the
local administrators are always politicising the issues. The tribals are being
cheated through denial of social and economic rights. Often, these tribals are
tortured and exploited by the police allegedly because they are Maoists.
To save themselves from the Maoist threat,
many officers do not report for duty; instead they try to get themselves
transferred to another zone with the help of political leaders. Therefore,
several Government departments function with depleted staff. On their part, the
Maoists are trying to persuade innocent and illiterate villagers to join their
cadre, Jena
said.

He also alleged that the police have
detained several tribals for questioning and they could be killed in fake
encounter. Muralidhar Patra, a local leader and human right activist, was
illegally arrested by the police in a clear nexus with some officials last year
as he opposed large-scale irregularities in NREGA works and illegal quarry in
the Teloki area.

Several tribals present at the meet
alleged that forest officials have been illegally foisting cases of poaching on
many villagers with an ill intention to harass them.
The press meet was also addressed by
president of Jajpur Ekta Manch Gayadhar Mallick and human rights activists
Rabindra Rout, Dr Manzoor Ali, Akshay Jena and Surekha Mallick.

Jajpur: Even as the Rio de Janerio Declaration on
Environment and Development, adopted on 14th June, 1992 by the United Nations
conference proclaims that states should recognize and duly support indigenous
peoples’ identity, culture and interest and enable their participation in the
achievement of sustainable development, it is alleged that nearly 200 innocent
dalits and tribals of Jajpur district and its nearby areas have been
languishing in the jail.
