Dalit Human Rights Defender at Risk

Pratap Kandi, a young dalit human rights defender who is the secretary of Anusuchita Jati O Jana Jati Bikash Sangathan of Konark in Puri district of Odisha sought Odisha Human Rights Commission’s intervention to protect his life with other family members on today with the help of Human Rights Front [HRF]

Mr Kandi is leading the dalit human rights movements in the adjacent blocks of Konark, he often takes the atrocity cases to various human rights bodies, during the NHRC open public hearing at Puri in last April, he filed many atrocity cases with victims at the camp and incase of Pipili gang rape victim’s case  he organized many rallies and protest in different parts of the district which was perhaps intolerable for Puri police subsequently the local Police Inspector Incharge of Konark PS Mr. Prakash Rath threatened him for any dire consequences.

On 6th July, the police forcibly arrested his two brothers with false cases then forwarded to court, unable to find Pratap there, the police abused his parents in slag languages and threatened to arrest his son soon .
