Press Release : Sensitization Program for Human Rights Defenders


"The door of NHRC can be illuminating, not dark

Bhubaneswar : 21st of March 2012, Human Rights front,  in association with National Human Rights Commission, India,New Delhi, organized a day long state level workshop for Human Rights Defenders working in different areas across the state of Odisha.
Under the chairmanship of Mrs. Namrata Chadhaformer member State Commission for Women and State Legal Service Authority,the meeting was inaugurated by lighting the lamp and Mr. Manoj Jena (Convenor, Human Rights Front) shared the objectives of the daylong workshop on the onset. Strengthening the platform for the protection of Human rights Defenders was one of the major objectives of the day, as it has been seen that there has been innumerous instances where the human rights defenders had to go through both state and non state actors repression.
The eminent personalities adorning the occasion apart from the human rights defenders from the various regions of the state were, Mr. A K Parashar,Joint Registrar(Law)& Focal Point for human rights defenders NHRC,Mrs. Jyoti panigrahi (Chairperson State Women Commisssion)  Dr. Bimalendu Mohanty (Former Vice Chancelor & Chairman,Transparency International India-Odisha Chapter), eminent Sarvodaya Leader Mrs. Krishna Mohanty.
Speaking at the occasion Mrs. Panigrahi appealed the human rights defenders to strengthen the rights of the common people and she also specially put emphasis on the rights of women who comprises 50% of our society. She also proposed to help the human rights defenders of the state in every ways possible.
Eulogizing the effort of the organizers Baghambar Pattnaik and Manoj Jena, Mr. Parashar stressed that there is every need today to have more and more of such programmes where the different issues concerning the human rights defenders can be brought to limelight. He also spoke about the role, function and challenges of NHRC and appealed the Human Rights defenders to make NHRC ,more able to help the people on need as he specially mentioned that they are the eyes and ear of the NHRC.

Commenting on a question,Mr. Abhay Sahu, the leader of Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti  shared his experience and also told the house about the rampant violation of Human Rights in the proposed POSCO project villages. Citing an example of a women who had gone to the police station to register a case, but was eventually arrested by the police under the clause of others referring to the conflict which happened there on the 14th of December. He also said that there were number of such incidents where people even without their knowledge has multiple cases registered against them. He sincerely appealed the NHRC to do a immediate enquiry in the region and relieve the people from this inhuman repression since last seven years.
Feliciating to a Transgender Defender
The workshop provided a platform for various rights based workers to come together and put forward their grievences. A  transgenders rights activist appealed for their space in the institutional setup of Women Commission.Apart from this major emphasis was also put on the issue of gross violation of human rights pertaining to the development initiatives that has been taken up by a state and corporate nexus. As it was depicted even pictorially in the beginning of the workshop how defenders and people asking for their rights in different situations and places in natural resource rich areas of eastern India had to come under severe violence of the State Machinery.                                          
 As the workshop progressed participants from across the state and other neighboring states shared their experiences and insights in their efforts to uphold human rights and strengthen the Human Rights Commissions.The workshop went through various sessions with the resource persons like Dr.Raghunath Pattnaik,Dean SOA Institute of Law, Mr.Dhirendra Panda,eminent human rights defender,Mr Baghambar Pattnaik Member NHRC Core-group of NGOs,Mr Nicholas Barla, eminent tribal rights defender etc.

There was a felicitation ceremony at inaugural recognizing the significant contribution of some of the human rights defenders of the state.
